BARCELONA, 19 Jul. - Matadepera, Castellolí and Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona) have registered the highest territorial socioeconomic index (IST) in Catalonia among municipalities with more than 500 inhabitants --131.8; 125.8 and 124.9 respectively--, as reported in a statement by the Institute of Statistics of Catalonia (Idescat) on Wednesday.

The 2020 data shows that on the other end, as municipalities with less than 500 inhabitants with the lowest IST, we find Seròs --65.1--, Barbens (Lleida) --57.1-- and Salt (Girona) --62.0--.

Idescat has ensured that, out of the 37 municipalities with a high IST --which exceeds the Catalan average by "more than 20 percentage points"--, 12 are located within the metropolitan area; 10 in the central regions, and six in the Alt Pirineu i Aran (Lleida).

On the other hand, out of the 31 municipalities with a low IST --20 points or "more below the average"--, 16 are in Ponent (Lleida) and nine in the central regions.

According to the report, the largest group of municipalities is the one in the medium-high level, consisting of 527 municipalities with a "strong presence throughout Catalonia", except in Terres de l'Ebre (Tarragona), and 352 municipalities that have a low IST, with the majority falling within this group.

The IST reflects information on six indicators: employed population aged 20 to 64, low-skilled workers, population aged 20 or older with low education, young population without post-compulsory education, foreigners from low or middle-income countries, and average income per person.

The average income per person, at 14,152 euros in Catalonia as a whole, places Matadepera (22,806 euros) and Sant Just Desvern (Barcelona) (21,511 euros as municipalities with the highest value, and Salt (9,468 euros) and Lloret de Mar (Girona) (9,758 euros) as those with the lowest value.

In Barcelona, 11 out of the 73 neighborhoods have an IST that is 20 points lower than the Catalan average: Ciutat Meridiana, Besòs i el Maresme, Trinitat Vella, la Marina del Prat Vermell and Vallbona.

On the other hand, nine neighborhoods have an IST that exceeds the average, by more than 20 points, where we find les Tres Torres, Sant Gervasi-Galvany, Pedralbes, Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova and Sarrià.
